BY ELIZABETH NELSON

1.) Have you ever met Mike Peters or any of his lieutenants?

Yes

2.) Have you ever lived in Indianapolis or at a branch of their church?

Yes, in Columbus/ Westerville area.

3.) What is the strangest thing you have witnessed in their group?

The strangest thing is that people do whatever Mike Peters says to do. For example, if Mike says to take someone bowling instead of sledding because he says sledding is too much excitement with not enough time for talking, they’ll do it; no questions asked. And, yes it does get that specific.* Another strange thing is that every letter that is written to someone outside the group is proofread and edited by at least one or two other people if not more, even if they never met the person. It wasn’t out of the ordinary for letters to family or other "outsiders" to be proofread by Mike himself even though he lives miles away and has many people in his own area to "watchdog". * Another very strange thing is the high number of adults that get baptized AGAIN after they get involved with the group. This is very common of all cultish groups, bible based or not. All the words and lingo that is used in the group that has to be explained to anyone on the outside.

4.) What is the most destructive action you have witnessed?

Once one of the leading woman asked another woman point blank if she was going to be willing and strong enough to join them for activities without her believing husband for no apparent reason other than "a feeling" that someone had about the woman’s husband. Unfortunately, over time she gave in to the pressure of the group and her marriage is sorely divided even now.

5.) What are the normal people like on the "inside"?

This really depends on who you are talking about. The people in the lead are much more controlling and opinionated. The rest follow without question. I believe many are dear Christians misguided as I myself have been at times over the years. Legalism is easy to fall into for many believers who want to be serious about God. They lack the healthy balance that grace brings to our walk with the Lord. And again, the leaders are followed without question, especially Mike Peter’s teachings.

6.) Are there others that you know that probably will leave or need help getting out?

Yes, I care very much about the freedom of many the people I knew and I pray for them. In fact, I held back saying anything that they may hear because I thought it would make them go deeper into the group due to the fact that they get a lot of "empowerment" from being on the defensive together. My dad once said to me when I was involved that he felt I was cloistering myself in the false safety of my little group. He was right.

7.) What would you say to the members that are still trapped in the cult?

I say remember the time when you heard from God for yourself, before someone told you that was "independent"? Remember when it wasn’t a sin to go out with your husband or wife? God says marriage is a holy union, earth’s only representation or picture of Jesus and His Bride.Remember you are saved by grace and not of your own works. His yoke is easy, His burden light.

—Exclusive groups breed ambition and strife. Galations 4:17 They zealously court you, but for no good; yes, they want to exclude you, that you may be zealous for them. You will see this so much as people are trying to gain acceptance. Yes, contrary to the "wordsmith lawyers" that lead this group would tell you, they do make you gain acceptance. A friend of mine who was involved told me she once confessed to the leadership that she felt like she had to "climb a wall" or prove herself to humans to be accepted. She was told to make no mistake about it she was being tested. This is very dangerous position for fallable humans to be in, whether you are the one trying to get in or the ones deciding if you are to be included. God said not to try to divide the wheat from the tares, that we my uproot the wheat in the process.(matt 13:29) This is exactly what they do. When Jesus preached and taught the multitudes He didn’t discriminate who was allowed to be in the midst. He did chose His disciples. Emphasis on Jesus chose NOT HUMANS! (On another note, it really stands out to me after writing this since I’ve been away so long how much gossip is involved in this group. It is "legalized" under the guise of "helping others".
