We testify about the things we have seen and heard. This document was initially created for publication to Factnet.org. It is an attempt to summarize the beliefs and practices of a religious group based out of Indianapolis, Indiana, which is led by Michael H. Peters (Mike Peters).
Much of this document is a condensation of information which already appears on Factnet and other websites. Contributors to this document are former members and people associated with Mike Peters in various ways throughout since his founding of The Church in Indianapolis.
This religious group (suggested to be a cult 1) is sometimes called "The Indianapolis Church" or "The Church in Indianapolis". This document will refer to the church as CII (note: current members of CII do not refer to their church as "CII"). There exists a different church in Indianapolis who call themselves the "Church In Indianapolis", who clearly identify themselves 2 with names and addresses. This document is not about them.
This document is intended as a summary of information known about Mike Peters and the Indianapolis Church. It is an attempt to "tell it to the church" and inform interested seekers about the teachings and practices of Mike Peters and CII.
Michael H. Peters is a husband and father. He reports growing up as a Catholic yet having no personal relationship with God. Sometime in his twenties he became a born again Christian through the Church of Christ, whom he said seemed "closest to the truth of the new testament church." 3
According to numerous verbal accounts by Mike Peters, he "leaving a high paying executive position" at Rand McNally serving as the Vice President of engineering (See Serial Exaggeration) in the early 1980's. He also explained that he was told he would be the first CEO of Rand McNally who was not a McNally family member. The July 2007 Indianapolis Monthly story, "Warning Signs", states Rand McNally only confirms he "worked at its Nashville, Tennessee, office as a printing-press room supervisor from March 1981 to April 1984." Mike Peters proclaimed about himself that he "converted over a dozen people" to Christianity at Rand McNally before leaving to fulfill his call to ministry as a preacher in the Church of Christ. One former member recalls, "Mike said 'I don't know of anyone with fruit like that.'
Either during or after religious training at a Church of Christ college, he was hired as the full-time minister of a Church of Christ in Burlington, Vermont. What has been described as a church split 4, Mike Peters led to Indianapolis a small group of Burlington church members loyal to him and his teaching.
The story goes that Mike Peters flew to Indianapolis to survey the city as a new home for the breakaway members. While either flying in or out of Indianapolis, he saw a rainbow in the clouds. He accounted this rainbow as a sign from God that the split-off group should relocate to Indianapolis. From this experience the "Rainbow Cards" were created and used during the early years as a pseudo-tract introducing non-members to what was then and now called The Church in Indianapolis (sometimes referred to as The Indianapolis Church).
Mike Peters also describes on several occasions seeing a rainbow over Columbus, Ohio, while driving in or out of that city. He saw it as God's sign that he must now endure personal pain and sacrifice to devote himself to a church planting in Columbus. 5
Rainbows have served as a sign to Mike Peters that God is confirming Peters' vision of "the church."
Mike Peters presents himself as an apostle, but he does so indirectly. He teaches that churches, or lamp stands, are established or built only by "one sent" (an apostle) who is a "master builder" who "must build according to the pattern" shown to him by God 6. Churches are planted only "on the basis of Apostolic Authority [sic] (which is the Biblical pattern)." 7
The New Testament model Mike Peters' espouses is that there is one church per city; therefore, "The Church in Indianapolis" is the only legitimate church in Indianapolis. Surface observations may imply Mike Peters' representation of himself as apostle is modest. Yet as one delves beyond the superficial, Mike Peters defines the role of Apostle as having final and ubiquitous authority. In practice, his apostolic role is not only absolute in Indianapolis, but highly persuasive , at the least, among satellite affiliate churches and groups.
Not all affiliate groups will be deemed by Mike Peters as a church, or lamp stand. Non-lamp stand groups are not churches which may create greater dependency on Peters' control and leadership -- from the smallest to the largest issue.
Mike Peters states:
"The idea of autonomous congregations doesn't exist in the Bible . Yes, the church in one city is certainly separate from the church in another city… The apostolic of God is the glue that holds everything together and builds it up." 8
(emphasis mine)
Contrary to Mike Peters' teaching, the Bible's New Testament states that Jesus holds everything together:
Colossians 2:19: "The Head (Jesus), from whom all the body (Church), nourished and knit together by joints and ligaments, grows with the increase that is from God."
Colossians 1:17: "by Him (Jesus) all things consist"
Mike Peters is viewed by his disciples to be an apostle, prophet, evangelist, teacher, and shepherd according to Ephesians 4:11. Though this is rarely stated publicly, this belief is an emotional glue that binds members to Mike Peters' teachings. This perception of Mike Peters was held by the contributors of this document's before, during, and after membership in CII.
Members share the view that Mike Peters is Ephesians 4:11 all-of-the-above. In Christian theological circles Ephesians 4:11 is known as the five-fold gifts of the ministry of Jesus Christ (apostle, prophet, evangelist, shepherd, teacher) to the church. Mainstream Christian theologians teach that only Jesus represents ALL the gifts stated in Ephesians 4:11. Those members who perceive Mike Peters as the embodiment of ALL these gifts border viewing him as a Jesus figure.
Says a former member:
"While I don't know of any members who believe that Mike Peters is Christ in the flesh, the deference given to him is like that given to no one else in the Indinapolis Church. Mike Peters' word is the word of God to them."
What does the future hold for Church in Indianapolis members who view their leader as gifted and, possibly, as infallible as Jesus? Former members have little or no recollection of Mike Peters confessing sin. Contrasted this to regular members who may confess shameful or embarrassing sin, Mike Peters is "the infallible one." One former member summarized this on Factnet, "the only man left standing is -- Mike Peters" 9 amidst a crowd of fallen humanity.
Mike Peters and the CII describe their church as a dynamic, organic structure.10 Comparisons are often made to a biological family. The boundaries between the CII and biological family become transparent. The church has "no-formal-structure" with "no-agenda" church meetings. These invisible structures and their regulations are strictly enforced. Regular members know better than to breach the protocols of the no-agenda, no-structure church. The obvious irony is that structures and agendas exist within the church while, at the same time, being denied.
The CII structure can be described as follows:
Rarely are leaders are identified formally; they are observed and approved by higher leaders. Members become leaders by receiving approval by Mike Peters (such as in a meeting, email, or sidebar discussions with) or tier 2 leaders from the top down. Higher level leaders may not be recognized by their public teachings, but rather, by the prowess with which they can admonish lower level members' lives.
Members below Tier-3 may encounter resistance if they initiate "the works of ministry which God has prepared in advance for us to do." Equippers (Tier 1 and 2) must first be involved to guide or approve of the works the member wants to conduct. Example, a member wants to invite the homeless to their home; the member must contact Tier 3 or higher members and obtain permission; any such "gathering" will likely be moved to the Tier 3 member's home. A member who goes outside this process risks church discipline and may be labeled as "independent" or "rebellious."
The word "Ministry" is used here and throughout the document. This word "ministry" is loathed among the CII and not used because it is viewed as the "traditions-of-men" baggage, and therefore unscriptural.
The word "approved" is not indicative of an approval process, but is derived from 1 Timothy 2:15: "Study to show yourself approved", and 1 Thessalonians 2:4 "But we have been approved by God to be entrusted."
An approved brother is a Tier 1, 2, or 3 leader who is recognized as gifted and "full of the Holy Spirit and Wisdom." Unless the member is viewed as "full of the Holy Spirit and Wisdom" that person is unfit to wait tables. If unfit to wait tables, that person is, therefore, unfit for any work of Christian service.
Consensus among former member state:
"CII community's structure is more similar to a caste system than to the family structure they claim."
The core residents of the CII is in northwest Indianapolis with small pockets or outposts of members in other parts of the city. Several enclaves exist around the city to which new members are urged to move close or into the enclaves to gain greater involvement in the church. These enclaves become the "habitat" for "daily life" or "kingdom life" or "church life" for the CII members.
Mike Peters and CII members proclaim their church as having no defined locale -- "neither here, nor there" and a "a city set on a hill that cannot be hidden" 14. Yet the "city set on a hill" is not very easy to locate since there is no formal meeting place. CII is not incorporated (no longer uses a 501(c)3) and owns no collective property. There was a P.O. Box setup by Mike Peters in the late 1980's which is still in use today. The phone number contact for CII initially belonged to Mike Peters, but was transferred to other tier 2 leaders when Mike Peters moved his home outside of the prefix-area for that phone number.
Upon arrival from Burlington, Vermont, these Church of Christ pilgrims originally settled in Indianapolis near 71st Street and North Michigan Road.
A large core of CII still resides in that area. The group expanded to other apartment complexes in northwest Indianapolis. In the 1990's, a large segment of the church purchased tracts of new home developments along 71 st Street. Occasionally, members are moved -- some by choice, some not by choice (see Personal Choice and Freedom) -- to other areas of town to be near new members or in an attempt to present their influence in those neighborhoods. Members may be directed to live near other members for either imparting or receiving discipleship through "daily life."
There are a handful of other groups around the USA and a few more around the world. More often, individuals get CII teachings and introduce them to their local home church or Bible studies. These groups may be sympathetic, appreciative, or unquestionably supportive of Mike Peters' teachings and the CII model. The few groups who subscribe and attempt to implement the teachings of CII become satellite-affiliates (my terminology) deferring to Mike Peters directly or a tier-2 leader who Mike Peters recognizes as a delegate. Occasionally, Mike Peters has directed families or leaders to move among the satellite-affiliate group to effectively influence that group.
CII was originally a 501(c)3 non-profit organization through which contributors could support audio, publishing, rental fees for meeting halls, and financial support for Mike Peters -- who was the only supported CII leader. The 501(c) 3 was abandoned in the early 1990's and now members support Mike Peters through means not known to this writer. Upon becoming a part of the church, one member reports he was promptly instructed by a Tier-2 leader to quickly obtain employment 15 so a tithe could be given to the church for support of the church. The Tier-2 leader assumed the new member had no other means of personal support (such as a savings account) since the new member had just moved to live in the CII.
However, the teaching of tithes is not heavily emphasized, while "giving to the work of the Kingdom" is emphasized. Members are encouraged to give to publishing and audio ministry needs or to creatively give within the church to members who have financial needs, and give toward apostolic missions lead by Mike Peters. Members may also be solicited, directly or subtly, to rally financially to the assistance of members who may be embattled in divorce or legal separation issues.
In the early days, Mike Peters and members spoke often of Romans 13:8, "let no debt remain, except the continuing debt to love one another." As a result, money borrowing was not an approved practice. This "doctrine" became more accommodating after Mike Peters financed a vehicle in the late 1980's. House purchases were also unapproved (because of the debt) until Mike Peters purchased a "strategically located" house in the 1990-91 time-frame. At this time, to these contributor's best recollection, Mike Peters was the only member owning a house. The exceptions to home ownership were 2 or 3 native Indianapolis families who already owned houses when they became members of CII. In the latter 1990's, Mike Peters and other leaders opened the door (or floodgate) for home ownership when entire streets of new-construction neighborhoods were purchased by members.
Throughout the 1990's, Mike Peters headed as CEO (per his business card) his LORDIN ENTERPRISES. Lordin offered a business organization framework to members starting businesses. It is unknown if Lordin is an LLC, sole proprietorship, s-corp, or something else. As early as 1989, Mike Peters used his Lordin Enterprises framework as an umbrella for his own consulting services such as computer training and graphics design. In exchange for using the Lordin Enterprises framework and accounting service, member start-up companies paid 8% to 10% of their gross annual revenue to the company. The most notable of Lordin Enterprises' ventures were:
It is unknown if Lordin Publishing is a non-profit organization or simply a label for CII publications. Many CII publications are published under the Lordin Publishing banner, copyright ownership belonging to Lordin Publishing 16. This raises the question of who owns Lordin Publishing. If Mike Peters owns Lordin Enterprises, does he own all copyrights to all publications and songs (some of which are not written by MP) produced by Lordin Publishing?
Mike Peters chooses luxury hotels with luxury rental cars over the homes of Christians he visits while in other cities. Lower caste members are questioned or rebuked for staying in economy hotels for the reason that money for such "extravagant travel" could have been used for a more noble "Kingdom purpose." Mike Peters' apostolic rendezvous have included luxury golf courses and luxury resorts. For "wisdom sake", Mike Peters may stay in hotels on his apostolic missions to prevent multiple Christians, whom he plans to visit, from meeting each other and thereby risk establishing "borrowed relationships" (see "Borrowed" Principle).
How does one become a member? By invitation only 17. One becomes a member by moving near or into the enclaves inhabited by the CII with approval from Mike Peters. Membership is conferred through an assimilation process and only with permission and direction from Tier 1, 2, or 3. Tier 2 or 3 confers with Mike Peters to make sure the "house is built with wisdom" when determining the location where a new member should live. CII members live in areas where they can have daily contact with other church members; any other arrangement is an exception. Mike Peters teaches that "daily life" is essential:
"daily, people looking into your eyes to SEE you" and that members can "admonish one another daily" 18.
For the sake of brevity, references are too numerous to list.
"Daily Life" is essential, if not compulsory.
Hebrews 3:13 reads:
"Exhort one another daily, while it is called today lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin."
This verse is rarely translated by Mike Peters (who has often represented himself as an authority on biblical Hebrew and Greek) as exhort, but rather "admonish." This could be the single most referenced (and misquoted) verse stated by Mike Peters. It is the foundation for the "daily life" of the CII. It is also used to bring members under church authority and separate members from non-members "who refuse to obey Jesus words" by receiving "daily admonishment." Page 9 of "Four Truths for a Foundation" states:
'We live in the middle of each other's lives every day as priests doing the work of God. This too, is an absolute command from God, in Heb. 3 and a hundred other places."Be called alongside, encourage and admonish one another every single day , so that we may all be saved from being deceived and hardened by sin, as long as it is called Today." We must speak more of this.'
Mike Peters and CII members do indeed speak more of this. You will rarely find a published document from CII that does not quote "admonish one another daily" multiple times.
According to Mike Peters', "Hebrews chapter 3, and a hundred other places" 19 are the basis for CII's totally-intermingled lifestyles – never out of sight of each other. The "daily" concept is used to demonstrate that CII is right and all other "attendance-based" churches are wrong, since those members are not "daily" involved in one another's life.
"Daily life", the cornerstone of CII control and fault finding which is so prevalent throughout the CII movement, is another mechanism to leverage control over members' lives by requiring proof they have received or given daily admonishment. Without the proof, members' viewpoint or lives face church discipline. Example: "Brother/Sister, who's been admonishing you? Have you been daily admonishing others? Would others say you've been 'admonishing one another daily?'" Members who cannot produce the fruit (names) encounter rebuke or church discipline. Fruit seems most often defined as "admonishment" of others.
It is unthinkable that a member would decide where to live or work in Indianapolis without first consulting other members and especially Tier 1, 2, or 3 leaders. Members will not exercise personal liberty without first consulting other members. Over the years, personal liberty has been gradually reduced to a regulated state of paranoia."Freedom" consists of choices presented as opportunities from Mike Peters or Tier 2 leaders (such as the opportunity to move to a different house or apartment, etc. ). The "opportunity" equals a member's freedom to choose from choices defined by Mike Peters' or other CII leaders. Some "choices" a member cannot refuse. If the member is among the lowest caste, this member quickly "counts the cost", the outcome, and most often "submits" to the opportunity presented by Mike Peters or tier-2 or 3 leaders or risks facing church discipline (being taken before "two or three witnesses" - see 31 Church Discipline -- Disfellowship and Excommunication ).
Members' activities are regulated and monitored by other members. Members who spend time alone, except on the basis of personal prayer time, are brought under severe scrutiny by fellow members and face the church discipline process."Togetherness" is taught to the point that members become hesitant and fearful of doing any activity alone. On FactNET, Wirklichmir's, CII apologist, 20 supportive statement of "togetherness" asks, "WHY AREN'T MORE PEOPLE SCARED TO BE ALONE???!" 21
Even prayer time may be scrutinized if perceived as an excuse to "be alone."
Domestically or abroad, Mike Peters and other leaders teach that all things should be done together."Practical" examples include anything imaginable: shopping for groceries, department store errands, washing laundry, visiting the library, walking in the park, reading a book or the Bible, doing good works (for which Jesus said "Do not let the left hand know what the right hand is doing."), or even going to the bathroom 22.
Mike Peters' and his followers constant emphasis on "togetherness" applies also to "family planning" how and when one may conceive children. CII members must follow the counsel of:
"His People! Wisdom in the multitude of (GODLY) counselors..."
"The pillar and foundation of truth is the EKKLESIA!" ... We are TOGETHER (that's HIS Plan) to listen for and obey
His CURRENT Thought on the practical matters of Life and life. In THAT,
and that ALONE, there is Safety.}
23
[SIC]
According to Mike Peters, even a married couple's decision to have children can only be done in the context of "TOGETHER" where there is "SAFETY." The quotes from the volumes of publications from CII are too numerous to list here.
Furthermore, according to CII thinking, why would you want to be alone? The rationale is that your desire to be alone is rooted in personal sin or some hidden evil. Real examples of"togetherness" application are:
On Factnet, Wirklichmir, a former member who supports CII doctrines and practices, teaches:
"The more ATROCIOUS and HEINOUS the crime or sin, generally, the MORE ALONE or secret one is ." [sic]
The CII paranoia is furth emphasized in his further statement:
"WHY AREN'T MORE PEOPLE SCARED TO BE ALONE???!" [sic] 24
These violations are often the real reasons why some members are removed from CII. Rather than excommunication (or dis-fellowship), an "opportunity" to leave is offered. Practically, the effect is the same as dis-fellowship, since contact with CII members is eliminated or limited to leaders in CII.
This doctrine has broken lives, split and ruined families, and ruined long term relationships among CII members. All the division and destruction is justified with Jesus' words that read, "Do not think I came to bring peace, but a sword." Members who violate this doctrine or fail to conform are, at best, brought to a cowering heap of tears; strong-armed into further submission; asked to leave; or dis-fellowshipped for failure to adequately participate in "TOGETHER" life.
Derived from 1 Corinthians 14:3-5, members are admonished to "Let all things be done for the edification of the church." Members are instructed to blend their identity with the church. This teaching is underscored with statements like:
"No individual identity should exist, only the church."
"You must lose your identity in the church."
"One body, one loaf, a shaft of wheat loses itself as it
blends into the loaf."
"Unless the seed falls to the ground and dies it abides
alone." 25
Unity and oneness are essential:
"How badly do you want what God wants — a Testimony of Oneness in your city? Please don’t see all of this as an "optional extra"—like the monogram of your initials on your Bible."That’s nice for you, if you want to do that." Value to the point of death what God prizes, what Jesus fervently prayed for, and what He was willing to die for. Once again the "dividing wall of hostility" must come down! Is anything else "Christian"? 26
Scripture and a-scriptural references are mixed to mold this not-so-new concept of communism or communalism. One might think we were talking about Marxism. These verses or concepts are [mis]applied to control the members relationship. The teaching shifts members' identity away from Christ alone as intercessor and object of faith (Sola Fide) to what CII teaches is God's only legitimate representative on earth: the Church (specifically, only those "Churches" adhering to New Testament doctrines and practices as taught and understood by CII). Mutually, regulated behavior is the effective result of members who "submit themselves to one another."
Mike Peters states in http://yourkingdomcome.com/questionsmrandmrs.htm:
"without daily people looking into your eyes to SEE you and to love you into greatness, it probably IS better to stay away from everything." The reference above is in response to a non-member's question about a questionable movie clip that was viewed during a gathering in CII. Scripture alone (Sola Scriptura) is insufficient. It is essential to have people "looking into your eyes" daily to see if you are sinning. CII members who do not submit to the daily eye exams become former members. The exceptions are Mike Peters and Tier 2 leaders who are the judges of what is beneficial or not beneficial.
They have a saying in The Indianapolis Church, especially among the leaders: "When you've seen me, you've seen Mike."
Jesus said, "When you've seen Me, you've seen the Father." Yet, Mike Peters and CII leaders teach:
"When you've seen them, you've seen me."
"We being many are ONE Body... THIS is how all men will know you are MY disciples!" [sic]
"If you've seen me, you've seen Dave, or Jeff, or John."
"Surely our cohesiveness as One Body is directly dependent."
The mingling of Scripture with Mikespeak happens so often that one begins
not to know the difference; members who notice will not challenge the
difference.
In various contexts (challenges, confrontations, or teaching
reinforcements) members say "well, when you've seen me you've seen
Mike." This writer believes this teaching ushered in
counter-identity/anti-individual culture among the church.
27
Members drop this phrase as gently as a 100 pound spiked gauntlet. It is an effective lording-over technique.
Since members (and supporters) perceive other's testimonies and criticism (such as on FACTnet) as slander against Mike Peters, it is also slander against them. The "when-you've-seen-me, you've-seen-Mike" shared personalization is why it is difficult even for former members to objectively digest criticism of Mike Peters or his teaching.
The CII "family" replaces your biological family."Physical family" is further demeaned by calling it "Phamily." 28
CII members are pressured to accept CII doctrines, and in turn, may zealously pressure their biological/marriage family to accept CII doctrines. This, more often than not, leads to division between CII members and their biological/marriage family. Devoted parents or children may be accused of committing "family idolatry." 29
Family devotionals (another word in the CII lexicon of unscriptural words) which come before church activity are regarded as family idolatry."Phamily" events such as: births, funerals, weddings, are all secondary to the capital "F" Family which is CII. Matthew 12:48-50 is used as the foundation for this teaching: "Who are my mothers and brothers…. It is those who do the Father's will." The "phamily" teaching results as:
1. Biological or even marriage relationships are secondary or inferior to the church, who are the "real family."
2. Many families, who assimilate into the CII, disconnect from biological families because their biological families' are unwillingness to "repent" and conform to CII teachings.
Mike Peters teaches:
"I want to encourage you to understand that withholding your affection is actually a tool in God's toolbox ... If you throw them all this love, compassion and sympathy, you're giving them drugs; and you're blinding them to what they really need. You might cost them their soul! " 30
Enough cannot be said about this tragic topic. Mike Peters admits,
"I know this is incredibly hard to understand. It's going to be a thousand times more difficult to implement." 31
It has also been thousand times more tragic. Mike Peters also continues:
"My parents are unbelievers, and even though I have other family
members who are believers, my parents have remained unbelievers. I
can't let them bounce their grandchildren on their knee in some sort of
love affair, as grandparents love to do. I can't give that
much affection away to them . Also, I can't allow my children to have that much respect, enjoyment
and fellowship with them, as long as my parents are renouncing the
Blood of Jesus. Trampling the blood of Jesus underfoot is an unholy
thing. Yes, my children are going to honor them and care about them, but
they WILL NOT have some lovey-dovey kind of relationship . It
is illegal in the Heavenlies to give away affection to
those who have dishonored Jesus and trampled the Blood of Jesus
underfoot as an unholy thing."
32
(emphasis mine)
Mike Peters illustrates that the "tool" of "withholding affection" is a tool to get people to do what you want them to do. The scriptures teach that the church is not to discipline "unbelievers." Yet he employs this "tool" on his parents, whom he calls "unbelievers." Mike Peters is saying his parents are "renouncing the Blood of Jesus" which suggests they were once Christians.
Both current and former members report confusion that results from applying this teaching: wives are encouraged to withhold affection from their husbands and children are taught to withhold affection from their fathers. Some men report never being allowed time alone with their own children.33 One man reports he was never allowed to be alone with his children for the first seven years of their lives. After he left the church it took two more years to gain his children's trust. Another current member reports he has never been allowed by his wife or other members to be alone with his children.
Who is turning the fathers from their children? Mostly the wives by means of Mike Peters' teaching and sometimes his counseling of them. Tim S, a former member, publicly reports:
"One of the most bizarre and devastating effects of false teaching that I observed during my 18yrs in Indy was this: Wives show no affection toward their husbands. Even queerer, they will not gladly receive "from" their husbands." 34
Mike Peters' affect on women who embrace his teaching is remarkably profound. While he boasts:
'I know that, my reputation with many, many witnesses is that I never ever "tell anyone what to do" -- no matter how much they may beg me...'
Evidence shows to the contrary. Women seem to be the most affected by his charismatic personality and teaching. When Mike Peters is not available, these women direct their attention toward other leading men in indeference to their own husbands. Women swoon to misty eyes at Mike Peters' words on an audio tape as they listen in their car or their gatherings from day to day with one another. Their experiences have been observed as powerful emotional enrapture.
How then can these fragile women remain emotionally unaffected by Mike Peters while receiving emails signed with "x o x o x o -- Love, Mike Peters" ("x" and "o" means hugs and kisses)?
The Bible teaches that the husband is the head of the wife and both should submit out of love for each other. In Mike Peters public email at www.yourkingdomcome.com/authority.htm, he not only counsels a wife to NOT lovingly submit to her husband, but he concludes with "Love mike."
But it gets worse. Below are the SECRET EMAILS published on Factnet: 35

" Hi, I don't know where to start (like usual). I found that "spousal authority" letter you wrote last year under my bed tonight. Then not two minutes later I opened up the "women's role" book and there it was again! Anyway, I needed to read it tonight. Vince got caught in the p**nography again a few weeks ago and since then it has been an all out war. He is afraid of losing the family/marriage so he has totally bullied me in a corner-- even almost taking them out of state w/out me to prove that he has the right to be with "his children" w/out my approval. I have been so full of fear (in many areas) but specifically that he will try to take the children and accuse me of being in a cult. He has used my mother in this (who already has her problems with me because she wants a relationship that i can't give to her) and she has stood with him. I talked to some ladies tonight and that was hard too. I will forward "notes" that Shelly typed out afterward. I am tired of being a wimp. I agree with what was said. I really don't know how to walk through this. Vince keeps accusing me of controlling when I protect the children and even just in directing them. There is something in his accusation that has shaken me. It's true I have not wanted him to be in control and he hasn't been until he got caught in sin and started blaming me. He says I've taken control over the house. What choice did i have? He has been gone and he's no leader. I know I need to protect the children, but I can't stop him from taking them again without a fight. I want to see why it shakes me. I feel sooo powerless. I feel like his tactics on saying he was taking them to Pennsylvania worked. I am BEGGING for a miracle! I am asking God to forgive me and deliver me from the fear of man. I have to let go of what every person i know might think! I want to hear and obey! I have been afraid because I have nowhere to go. I want to tell you this and not fear the risk. I have been asking God since I found the computer stuff if i should stay or go. And i still don't know but i am asking God to make me completely willing. While no one has told me what to do i feel like in the conversation tonight it was encouraged to protect the children no matter what. On the same token it was said by someone that I haven't proven myself with Jesus so i couldn't stay with anyone of them. I am probably wrong to be offended but I am. I don't deny that so many selfish motives have been exposed for which i am so grateful to Him. But something about thinking I have to prove something to people is what i am trying to stay away from. I believe His timing is perfect in all of this. PLEEAASE rebuke, correct, shine light, etc. love, elizabeth |

" Hi Liz...... I do understand the difficulties here, no doubt. The pain and confusion and unknowns can be quite anguishing, beyond question. You must TRUST Him that if you do your best for HIM, it will work out in the end. If someone told you "You must not murder" they would not be "telling you what to do" - but only reporting what God has said. In your many opportunities to murder someone, then, you should remember God's Command, and SPECIFICALLY CHOOSE those decisions, on your own, of how to apply that Truth. The same is true for "YOU MUST PROTECT THE CHILDREN." There are many specifics you must apply on your own to obey this Command from God. The Command to "not be worse than an infidel" by not protecting them, and the many other Scriptures are not "telling you what to do" -- but giving you GOD'S MANDATE for you. You'll have to figure out what that means, day to day. As for the "living situation" I'm sure they didn't mean to "insult" you, but just to point out that "the double minded woman is unstable in all her ways" and that unless you are "without wavering, fully persuaded" and not a "weak-willed woman" -- then you will vacillate and waver and be unstable, NO MATTER WHERE YOU LIVE. Perhaps you can find a "christian attorney" or someone who can tell you what you can legally do to protect yourself from a fornicating, abusive, child-napper, should you choose to do that? But, that's all up to you. I do know that even pagan women don't put up with the abusive situation, the covenant breaking betrayals, and "locking children in rooms away from their mother" and things you have tolerated. But, that's all up to you...... Regardless, PRAYING WITH YOU...... Love, mike posted by Danrepent on behalf of Elizabeth N***** |

When counseling a wife about criticism she heard about CII from a Christian at another church in the Indianapolis area, Mike Peters writes, "ask him if he really likes living in a house, instead of an apartment?" Veiled threats like this is par for the CII course.
1 Timothy 3:15 states that the "church is the pillar and foundation of truth." As such, CII doctrines are viewed as matters of truth and righteousness which, if rejected or critically questioned, result in discipline and dis-fellowship. It is also taught that professing Christian, non-members, who reject CII (Mike Peters) teaching, should be brought "into the valley of decision" 36 regarding their own salvation. Those who reject CII teaching are said to be "not obeying Jesus", "hate Jesus", or called "pagans." 37
Mike Peters views CII as The pillar of Truth (with a capital T) in Indianapolis, Indiana, and perhaps the world. TCII is "the" true church or "a" true church, depending with whom you talk. Yet ignorance to CII's teachings is only *tolerated* by unread, interested outsiders. To the CII member, "The Church in Indianapolis" is the only "expression" of a legitimate "lamp stand" they know. CII's perspective is that Mike Peters' teaching is unique in the world and that his teaching carries (capital "A") Apostolic weight. Non-members who critically question their doctrine are quickly viewed with caution or as enemies. Internal critique of Mike Peters' teaching is virtually non-existent. Should any CII member survey the world, they would probably not see an expression of "corporate body life" like their experience. As Mike Peters emphatically teaches, "in an attend-me religious expression, leaven is WELCOME and HIDDEN." 38 Members who unquestionably accept Mike Peters' teaching believe there is no other spiritual environment capable of protecting them against the leaven of unconfessed sin.
Since Factnet is not viewable by CII's hisfeet.org web proxy, Mike Peters posted his challenge to his flock on Factnet 39 to prove himself; "if you believe the grass is greener", "we'll help you pack", "no strings attached." Mike Peters' statements underscore:
CII's mindset requires that to be a part of the church (see item 44. Proximity ) is to live in the church. Members who cease membership in the church are "encouraged" to leave the city or state. For former members to knowingly live near other CII members is viewed by CII as unwanted and provocative.
Another case in point, Tim S reports when he was excommunicated, he was told to move out of Indiana and hand over his house (which he owned) to members of the church. When asked why he did this, his response was that to do otherwise would "drive his wife insane."
One member reports being pressured on two occasions to handover expensive personal items, gifts received by "outsiders" (family, or pre-CII friends) for use by "approved brothers" for the greater good of CII and "The Kingdom." 40 Young married couples have forgone their honeymoons or have been herded toward other older married couples with whom they would vacation during their honeymoon. In the first case, the member's reported scenario "felt like extortion." In the latter, the practices are strong arm tactics used to mold members into the image of the collective "one loaf."
"Lower caste" members are kept under control of leading members by divulging confessions given in confidence. Revelations (and often exaggerations) of these confessions to other members under the guise of "seeking wisdom" are used as leverage against the confessing member. Former members are silenced with CII's smear threats with "documented" 41 past sins.
How exactly these sins are "documented" is unknown, but in one publication Mike Peters reports a "hidden tape player" (tape recorder) "at someone's home":
"Brought to you by... a hidden tape player in a spontaneous living room conversation amongst a bunch of folks, at someone's home, after dinner…" 42
There have been boasts in excess by Mike Peters and his proxy apologists of documented or catalogued sins by former members who are now telling of their experience with CII.
Therefore, current and former members know their will be a price to be paid by telling their stories -- the blackmail of uncovering "sins" or struggles "confessed" in confidence by members struggling for God's acceptance through the hands of CII.
Mike Peters has been called a "serial exaggerator." He misreport and distorts the gossip reported to him by his followers. Gratuitous evidence of this can be found on Factnet. Mike Peters has been confronted from "outside" the church about lying, exaggeration, and gossip. He has not responded.
CII's supporters say that we should go to him (Mike Peters) alone for any preceived problems according to Matthew 18:15. Yet, former members and those outside the church can't exactly "tell it to the church" according to Matthew 18. Access to CII members is tightly regulated by its leaders. Another former member reports going to Mike Peters alone, then in the presence of other Christian witnesses (which Mike Peters may not regard as Christian) without any response from him in return. 43 In an earlier situation, the tables were turned and the "confronter" becomes the "confronted." The latter situation also resulted in no response from Mike Peters.
If an outsider needed to "tell it to the church", how would they do that? It is a problem since the church is tight-lipped about its meeting times, places, and membership. Outsiders have attempted to to communicate by an email to members offering their criticism. In earlier days damage control was issued by email, voicemail, or pager to "ignore" or "throw away" the "satanic" rantings of Peters' detractors. Furthermore, CII operates their own Internet Proxy and Email server (hisfeet.org). System administrators can quickly intercept email to members if directed.
Mike Peters and CII leaders teach "borrowed" ideas, concepts, songs, Psalms, sometimes Bible scriptures (see Borrowed Praise & Liturgy), and borrowed relationships are inappropriate. Like Mormon missionaries who are trained to reject non-mormon literature, brainwashed CII members are paranoid about presenting or (or sometimes receiving) anything that may be viewed as "borrowed."
The references below illustrate how important "borrowed principle" is to Mike Peters and the CII mindset:

Not all of these teachings are authored by Mike Peters. Ironically, CII leaders "borrow" from each other their "borrowed" words and concepts from Mike Peters which are constantly regurgitated. CII's websites (allatthisfeet dot com) have "borrowed" movie montages (Braveheart) and copyrighted MP3 (Steve Camp, songs by Christian artists integrated brochure-ware of their church. Would the copyright owners approve of these uses of theirs songs if they knew the practices their music was underscoring?
A "borrowed relationship" is defined by Mike Peters as two or more parties meeting each other through a mutually known third party. So if you (Person-B) meet Person-C through mutual friend Person-B, Person-C is a "borrowed relationship" which must be facilitated by Person-B, unless Person-A is a Tier-2 or 3 leader.
Members who attempt to foster a relationship with a newcomer or outsider after meeting them through another member are accused of "borrowing relationships." This extends to relationships through work associates too. No "relationship" is off limits from this unwritten regulation.
"Borrowed relationships" are forbidden and can provoke discipline (excommunication) if repentance is not quickly made by the member. "Borrowed relationships" seem to be extremely threatening to Mike Peters. He has been known to write huge letters of rebuke, make late night, rebuking phone calls, or make a show of anger to those who violate this regulation.
However, Mike Peters or Tier 2 and 3 leaders may engage new relationships through introduction by members without the accusation of "borrowed relationships." This doctrine reins in additional control to Mike Peters and Tier 2 and 3 leaders by preventing members' relationships with non-members and creating further dependency on the church.
"What's borrowed praise? Borrowed praise is maybe one of the songs in a songbook. Maybe it's one of King David's psalms." 44
CII's teaching contradicts the Apostle Paul who taught contrary in 2 Timothy 3:16: "All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness." In Ephesians 5:19 the Apostle Paul again writes:
"Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord;"
This "borrowed doctrine" is a treacherous water to navigate for the CII member. On the one hand, singing or meditating on the Psalms can be called "borrowed" praise and worship along the lines of a pre-written liturgy. According to Mike Peters, liturgy of any kind is not christian:
'"LITURGY" IS NOT CHRISTIAN!! "Liturgy" (pre-programmed, pre-planned speeches, music, services, chants, sequence of events) contradicts and disobeys the teachings of Jesus and the recoded ways of how he lived..' [sic] 44b
Conversely, CII borrows a popular christan songs from Christian recording artists and calls it "Unborrowed Worship" on their website.
This doctrine is another reason why lower caste members subservantly "count the cost" before speaking, singing, or offering Psalms or hymns.
Former members are perplexed by the amount of time Mike Peters spends with wives of other husbands and a specific single woman. He has done this at home and while traveling. His travel entourages have included other men's wives while his wife is not present. Former members have difficulty recalling if Mike Peters ever traveled with his own wife on his apostolic-missionary journeys. CII and satellite affiliates seem proud that outsiders cannot distinguish husbands and wives among groups traveling with Mike Peters or other leaders on their apostolic missionary outings.
Mike Peters denounces other men or women as having "a lust for the opposite sex" who he observes engaged in far less questionable activity as his own (like having a conversation). Seemingly immune to those weaknesses by which he denounces others, Mike Peters has been able to counsel wives struggling with their husbands (or prospective fiance's), encourage women to leave their non-conforming spouses, spend long hours into the night on walks or private conversations with those single or married women.
CII and Mike Peters' stated position is that gossip is sin.
Despite their theological declaration, gossip, slander, and innuendo proliferates among the group. Church members relate others' activities to members or leaders within the CII "organic" authority framework. It is an expected form of "seeking wisdom" about other people. A member is guilty until proven innocent by the testimony of two or three or the corporate church. As stated elsewhere, Mike Peters is, at best, a serial exaggerator and encourages gossip under the guise of "House of Chloe."
Mike Peters justifies this practice with 1 Corinthian's 1:11 where "the house of Chloe" reports contentions and sexual immorality to the Apostle Paul. As described in the "doctrine of aloneness" in item #4, an objecting member may be identified as rebellious or unsubmissive to authority. Therefore, to object is to be a rebel, and rebellion is the sin of witchcraft, and witchcraft is the work of the devil.
Mike Peters often says, so-and-so "has a lust for…" [ insert deviant behavior here ]. It does not matter if evidence does not exist. This can be said to the member directly or to anyone else Mike Peters chooses to disclose his discerning revelation.
Members are shamed into submission and blackmailed into silence by Mike Peters' innuendo and threats of disclosure of their "sins." These members become an example for other members who view the castigated member through the lens of Mike Peters' shame-inducing comments.
1 John 1:7 "If we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another."
Past transgressions are not forgotten whether identified by Mike Peters or by other members or confessed. Low-caste members who have little or nothing to confess are accused of not "walking in the light." Therefore, there is pressure to confess sin. Pressured or not, the member's sins are passed up through tier 4, 3, 2, then to Mike Peters. The exceptions start at the top with Mike Peters who, over the years, has had little controversy or struggle to confess except for sins long in the past.
CII follows teaches the discipline process prescribed by Jesus in Mathew 18:15-17:
"Moreover, if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him alone; if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear thee, then take with thee one or two more, that at the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church; but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican."
CII's use of this process is broad and selective.
Broad because members often tell "him his fault" and then take "one or two more" (or 6 or 10 more) to, perhaps, coerce agreement on an issue; selective in that higher tier members have more relational-political clout insulating them from the same fault-finding to which lower tier members are subjected. Members have been asked (or told) to leave both with and without the process. The excommunication process perpetually looms as a threat for low tier members to keep them compliant.
Members who leave the church usually are limited in their contact with CII members. Some may be dis-fellowshipped completely if they do not leave in the prescribed manner. The Factnet eruption occurred over the introduction of one such former member's name: Dennis Elslager.
Elslager tried to inconspicuously leave the group with whom he was living without any raucous. He called Indiana Families Against Cults (IFAC) for help. After getting a place to stay with IFAC's help, he found the following message left on the window of his car:
You left just before being asked to leave. Your arrogant attitude and bitterness expressed the last few days [sic] can't be permitted to remain unrepented of, among any true group of disciples. Hopefully, where you go from here true disciples will continue to touch the motive of your heart.
As for being exclusive, I know of no church in America with as many relationships with so many kinds of churches as us, so that's simply not the case.
We will continue to pray for you though, to come back to Jesus.
Nick Bryant
Andy Roberts

Tim S. reports of his excommunication:
"A man named Bryan Bearden approached me and told me of a meeting with himself and three others. He did not disclose their names (and they remain anonymous to this day) He told me that it was decided that I leave my house, job and the state of Indiana." 45
Members who are told to leave are often told to leave the state. The intimidation factor is enough that members don't contest the verdicts. Some do remain locally, but their contact with existing members is slim to none. Again, Tim S. explains to a reporter in the July 2007 Indianapolis Monthly magazine:
"When you've lived with these people for 18 years, raised your children with them, they're your family, and now they're all rejecting you with arms folded and scowls-who wants to live there?"
When Mike Peters responded to Tim S. on factnet, the explanation he gave is that Tim wasn't "helping people know Jesus" better. Mike Peters declares:
"I'll make the point… We must obey 1 Cor. 5, which commands us to remove those who will not bow their knee to Jesus in their every day lives, from the church. There are no choices." 46
Reasons for excommunication vary according to the accusation. This list doesn't affirm or deny the accuracy of these accusations and the applications and interpretation of these accusations are broad:
"Lording over" and authoritarianism is the leverage for other members and leaders to maintain member conformity to church doctrine and/or leader expectations. The church teaches against authoritarianism and is critical of Christendom for its formal structures that "lord over" its members. Yet, CII simultaneously practices a firm authoritarianism within its ranks.
Church discipline is not a great threat for Tier 3 or higher leaders unless they question teaching or practices (it rarely happens and may have happened only once or twice according to former members). These people are "approved" and become less approachable. Lower caste members must approach anything questionable they see in these peoples lives humbly. Even if lower cast members confront these leaders, the tables will be turned on lower caste members who may bring a charge against recognized leaders in the Church. Therefore, the higher echelons of the oligarchy become sealed off from the scrutiny to which lower caste members are subject.
Members cannot quit without loss of relationship with other members. Additionally, CII is their entire life, especially for young adults and children who have grown up in the church. Families may be divided if a member wants to leave. For spouses who may want to leave, pressure and division is exploited within the family as church members rally to emotionally and financially support a member who desires to remain.
Leaders live with privileges not afforded to lower caste members. Lower ranking members require permission to do those same things. Examples are sports and hobby interests, travel decisions, biological family visits, choice of living locale, home ownership, and visits with past friends.
There is no "protecting of dignity" in CII. Your friends ("brothers and sisters") are only as good as the pressure required to bring them to conformity to a CII leader (Mike Peters or some other leader).
Accountability is where the authoritarianism of CII draws its "authority." While the "accountability" ministries of Christian denominations are criticized by CII for being "outward" with no ability to change the heart, accountability is demanded of "lower caste" members, who feel pressured to meet outward expectations and thus fall prey to the same denominational criticisms. Contrarily, Mike Peters and Tier-2, Tier-3 leaders are unaccountable in the detailed minutia to which non-leading members are subjected. While CII is not an "accountability movement," accountability is demanded of average members. Accountability among the top tier is less attainable from lower cast members due to the upper tier members perceived spirituality.
A former member and CII apologist writes:
"Mike was and is accountable to all the other leaders there that I know about. I can name at least 6 men off the top of my head that he is accountable to and labors with, along side, as a brother." 47
Though he never tells who these are, this member confirms is that CII leadership is an Oligarchy at best, or a top-down dictatorship. This is not unusual in Christian churches, but it is denounced by CII of those churches as an unscriptural "clergy-laity" system. CII is the embodiment of the thing they condemn.
The perpetuity of CII is a result of like-minded devotion to CII doctrine and practices. Accountability is enforced by members withholding affection when other members go astray in behavior or expressed thought. Members find themselves on the periphery of activity if they haven't "made things right" through approved leaders. That leader or member then informs other members that fellowship with this individual may resume.
Sin must be confessed and repentance made. Mike Peters often taught on the "sin of Achan" (Joshua 7:1-26). Achan hid forbidden treasure in his tent against the command of God to the harm of the Israelite congregation. Therefore, no hidden sin is tolerated. No hidden anything is tolerated. If anything is hidden, or perceived as hidden, it must therefore be sin, or the "sin of Achan." This is very serious and grounds for dis-fellowship from CII.
While Mike Peters and CII teach against the "mortal" sins described in Galatians 5, there are things that CII consider sin which mainstream born again believers may not regard as sin. Likewise, there may be liberties CII affords itself that mainstream Christians may regard as wreck-less at best. Some "sin" according to CII include:
The last points are considered as immoral and sinful because the member is acting "independently", which is the sin of Adam and Eve who ate from the Tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil; or the sin of "presumption" which is satanic sin since Satan presumed to "ascend the Thrown of the Most High" (Isaiah 14:3). It is through the Church, CII, "that [the] manifold wisdom of God should be made known." 48
Searching Allathisfeet.com, one is hard pressed to find evangelistic teachings for telling the Gospel of Jesus Christ. CII focuses instead on the "Gospel of the Kingdom", "on earth, as in heaven." There is little focus given to proclaiming the "Good News" of Jesus' death, burial, and resurrection. While there are CII members who are evangelistic in their jobs and public situations, there is little emphasis on the Gospel of Salvation in Jesus, and any evangelism is usually connected with the teachings and mindset of CII.
CII's "Cultbuster" teaching 49 illustrates their methods are directed at Christians rather than lost souls.
Mike Peters teaches in "How to Eat from the Tree of Life" 50 that God contradicts himself with new revelation.
"So Moses received these ten commandments on the stone tablets. God wrote them out and one of them was, "Thou shalt not kill." That's scriptural, right? Would you agree that is very scriptural? That was in the law of God, "Thou shall not kill." Notice what happens next though…. He has just come down from the mountains with these tablets that say, "Thou shalt not kill." They had the Scriptures right in front of them (except they are in little pieces now), and then the Lord says apart from the Scriptures, "Go kill your brothers and your friends. 51
In this example, Moses commands the Levites to kill Israelites who are worshiping the golden calf (which God has already forbidden as a capital crime). Mike Peters says, not the Bible:
"the Lord says apart from the Scriptures, 'Go kill your brothers and your friends'."
This is an alarming translation of the scripture and is out of mainstream Christianity or Judaism. As in many of Mike Peters'teaching, he rewrites and mistranslates.
Mike Peters scoffs at challenges to his interpretation of ancient Hebrew and Greek. So either 1) Mike Peters knows this difference and is deliberately hiding it from his disciples, or 2) He does not know the difference.
These examples of Mike-speak permeate his writings, audios, all of CII teaching... and dangerous.
"Subjective truth" teaching is foundational to CII and was formulated early in CII. Mike Peters constantly uses this same logic to shift focus from the immutable Word of God to "revelation" from God which may contradict God's word. This teaching allows Mike Peters to live a different lifestyle from the other members or excuse his questionable travel activities. Ultimately, this foundational doctrine espouses that God's word is subject to man's interpretation (rather than man's interpretation is subject to Scripture) and additional revelation according to spiritual leaders. It also plaes the CII disciple at the feet of Mike Peters as the highest authority on these matters.
Most alarming, like in Mormonism or Scientology, he has completed the groundwork in the minds of his disciples that truth can change through special revelation illuminated to the prophet, Mike Peters.
"Can two walk together, except they be agreed?" This verse is the justification for agitation, divisiveness, and strong-armed tactics for members who disagree with the actions of another member. As in the world, unity is used to start wars and cause division. It is used against church members who may question or disagree with anything brought upon them or questioned by other members. The concept is also the "ace up the sleeve" when members engage other Christians where "unity" on Mike Peters teaching cannot be achieved. There are exceptions, as not all members (especially among lower caste) may actually desire fellowship with outside believers. Yet, those relationships are subject to scrutiny from other members and leaders who use this unity verse to leverage a member deeper into the CII mindset or out of fellowship.
CII members generally hold to fundamental tenets of Christianity such as the Trinity, Deity of Christ, the need for salvation, etc. However, teaching on fundamental tenets, such the Trinity, are conspicuously absent.
An artifact of Church of Christ influence is the high emphasis place on baptism (water immersion) for salvation. Baptism in the Church of Christ and CII is considered essential for salvation. New members are sometimes scrutinized as to the legitimacy of their conversion or baptism when encountering CII. Some members are re-baptized after entering the church counting earlier baptisms or professions of faith in Jesus as illegitimate. It is not uncommon for new members to be baptized a second time when entering the ranks of CII.
CII and members teach this fundamental protestant doctrine. Yet, members are loaded up with rules and regulations which may disqualify them from salvation. Members who cannot meet the standard may be dis-fellowshipped or given the opportunity to leave the church or face Church Discipline.
Members of CII live in close proximity to each other. A member "leaving the church", in most cases, means that the member leaves the city. Some members who are not formally dis-fellowshiped, may be moved away from the church so that they "may be happier somewhere else", or they are told to leave their home or apartment and take up residence elsewhere.
"Whatever is not from faith is sin." (Romans 14:23) This verse again is used to regulate members' behavior when disagreeable behaviors arise. Behaviors as benign as study habits (professional or academic), hobbies, sports interests, musical interests may be designated as "sinful" or idolatry due to CII's subjective "daily people looking into your eyes" exam 52. Lower caste members are most likely to be subjected to these standards.
Members confess sin. Leaders confess weaknesses. Example: Mike Peters confesses he gets irritable after long days of "helping others know Jesus better. Lower caste members confess serious temptations and sins only to have that sin used against them at later dates if they should question teaching or actions by other more "approved" members. These confessions can be used at a later date to manipulate or blackmail (out of fear) the member into submission.
"Fact is, everyone IS. YOU are brain-washed" according to the CII author 53. Furthermore, "Let GOD brain-wash you! Any other source of brain-washing (and everyone IS) is fatal." Members are, therefore, "un-brainwashed" to believe "everyone else is" brainwashed and, therefore, spiritually dangerous to the member.
This topic is better called, The Doctrine of Modesty 54. This application of this doctrine is only second in scope to "togetherness."
CII's response to worldly immodesty suggests that medical exams and embalming (because a mortician will see your dead, naked body) are immoral. CII's never ending "admonishing one another daily" on the virtues of modesty is yet another measuring rod for members' behaviors. Selective application of the Modesty Doctrine exists depending on members ranking. Members have been rebuked with comparisons to sexual deviants or child molesters if they violate modesty expectations.
Mike Peters and CII leaders have taught their members to designate other members of CII as the custodians of their children and estate upon death.
Mike Peters, Kevin M., and Nick B. provided a sample Will with approved language as a model. In 1989 and 1990, "Will signing parties" were conducted where nearly every family presented their Last Will and Testament for official Indiana notarization in conformation of expectations of assigning their estate and children to other CII members.
Around 2002, Mike Peters and Tier 2 leaders including Bryan B. circulated a model Will that states they be buried within 24 hours in keeping with the Modesty Doctrine so that no mortician be may embalm them and as a result see their naked body. Their new later model Will more clearly stated assignment of their children's custodial care go exclusively to CII members.
"BLOOD RELATIVES" are specifically excluded.
Sample (1)
EIGHTH:
Upon my death, I direct that my body be buried as soon as legally possible. I direct that my body be transported to the cemetery for immediate burial in the earth without embalming or cleaning of any kind. I specifically direct that my body not be cremated. Furthermore, I direct that my body not be included in any kind of "viewing" or "funeral service" and that any "memorial service" held in my honor be held without the presence of my human remains. I also direct that my remains not be transported to any location other than directly to the cemetery selected by my surviving spouse. In the event my spouse does not survive me, I direct that my remains be transported directly to the cemetery selected by my Executor. This will specifically prohibits the transferring of my remains to any BLOOD RELATIVE except as outlined in this will or determined by my Executor.
Sample (2)
ARTICLE V
NOMINATION OF GUARDIAN
Should it become necessary to appoint a guardian of the person of a minor child, I nominate ___ ___ ___ and ___ ___ ___, of Indianapolis, Indiana, to serve as Co-Guardians of my surviving children who are minors at the time of my death. If the above nominees are unable to serve as Guardians together, I nominate ___ ___ ___ and ___ ___ ___, of Indianapolis, Indiana, to serve as Co-Guardians. If the above nominees are unable to serve as Guardians together, I appoint my Executor to function with my full authority to select, at his discretion, guardians for my children. This Will specifically prohibits the reverting of my property or my children to any BLOOD RELATIVE excepts as mentioned in this Will or selected by my Executor.
Mike Peters urged CII beginning around 1990 to obtain passports. The reason given was so members could quickly leave the country if God so willed.
This push for passports again occurred after the last round of "Wills."
There is nothing sinister about having a passport. Yet one has to consider the timing that in two cases this happened on the heals of the Will Upon Death updates that were instructed (see 31. Will Upon Death).
Twenty years ago Mike Peters lead a group of followers out of Burlington, Vermont to Indianapolis, Indiana. Might there be a second exodus? If so, to where?
Members put their life decisions into the hands of other members, especially the leaders. Members who do not seek permission about their life decisions (see 29. Gossip and "Seeking Wisdom" (Mike Peters' House of Chloe)), are subjected to Matthew 18 discipline process.
Members will not travel, write letters, or converse with biological family members (outside the church) without oversight from other members.
Meetings are spontaneously planned by approved brothers or approved sisters. You must be on a call-list, email-list, or pager-list for time and place. Meetings have a no-agenda agenda. Meetings, large and small, are modeled after 1 Corinthians 14:26.
According to 1 Corinthians 14:26, all members contribute to church gatherings. This concept is core to Mike Peters' flagship book, Meetings in His Kingdom , in which Mike Peters says on the first page "this book is not about meetings." Approved brothers and sisters take a "leading" role for teaching and admonishing in meetings. Yet, any members may contribute "a psalm, hymn, or word of instruction." Lower caste members, however, must humbly make their contributions in obvious deference to approved leaders. Approved leaders (Tier 2) enjoy untethered liberty with their offerings of testimonies or teachings to the church.
Meetings are mandatory attendance except for 1) job responsibilities, 2) child care responsibilities, or 3) you're playing golf with Mike Peters. A member may get away with missing 1 or 2 meetings, but miss 3 and church discipline may ensue (except for excuse #3).
1 Timothy 3:2 "Now the overseer must be above reproach."
Mike Peters' doctrine and practices (unusual relationships with married and single women, manipulative, meddling in families, gossip, exaggerations and innuendo) are far from "above reproach." Any one of these faults is enough to remove an overseer from a position of authority in healthy churches. While he may be a charismatic gentlemen, he has also conducted himself on numerous occasions as vicious, controlling, quick to anger, slander wielding, and antagonistic. Mike Peters and CII leaders derive their power by their criticism of flawed Christians and flawed churches. They redirect criticism using the excess of failure in Christian churches today with such sentiments as "in an 'attend me religious expression, leaven is WELCOME and HIDDEN." They further deflect questions or criticism of their group by pointing to the faults of their critics.
Mike Peters often quotes statistics about pornography, divorce, and teen rebellion among Christian churches today. Yet what outside survey has been conducted of CII? Mike Peters and his disciples (of whom some of us once were) regurgitate his words implanted by rote repetition and endless reading of books and listening of audio tapes. CII members either fail to see or cover up the same problems in CII 62 that they criticize in the "church system." Teens struggle (and are sent away rather than fall away), marriages end in divorce (these too are sent away), men struggle with pornography or lust or pride (yes they do!), women struggle with gossip (or justify it as "seeking wisdom"), wives struggle with (or give in to) being a domineering spouse in the marriage or express disinterest in their husbands (or have cooey feelings toward Mike Peters), spouses punish each another, angers flair, patience grow thin, parents lose their tempers, and roommates look for new ones because they can't stand the one(s) living with them. Is it this way all the time? Probably not. But the same humanity that is outside of CII exists inside of CII.
Regrettably, the most blinding problem is Mike Peters' inability to see his own faults in order to sustain his ambition for a "spotless bride" in the Church in Indianapolis. We don't mock anyone's desire for Holiness and Purity as commanded by the scripture; purity of the flesh does not occur in this life, for the flesh is already condemned. Only in Christ's purity accredited to us by his Blood and resurrection can we boast.
Our suggestion is for Mike Peters to step aside and seek personal spiritual help for himself outside the Indianapolis Church. Then, he may affect change that first "begins in the house of God."

Using a tactic commonly employed by email spammers and pornographers, a CII supporter coycatted Indianapoliscult.com and registered Indianapolis.org in response to the Indainapoliuscult.com anti-cult website. This tactic is used by internet thieves to intercept email and internet traffic intended to the original domain recipient.

1 Indiana Families Against Cults suggested in the early 1990's that Mike Peters and the Church in Indianapolis is cultic in their teaching and practices.
2 It's up to you to discern if a group is a church or not. An address and Yellow Page listing is not a qualification for a church, nor is a United States of America 501(c)3 non-profit status from the IRS a qualification. We the People of The United States of America say in our Constitution that "Congress can make no law no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof." Therefore, in the USA "the people" define the church, not the government. The founding fathers of America presumed that The Holy Bile was the standard for defining a church. Yet in America today, any person can declare themselves a church for any reason and be recognized as such... even if they are a cult.
3 Paraphrase as reported by a man who lived briefly with Mike Peters.
4 Reasons for the church split are unknown to the contributors of this document.
5 On at least one occasion, which was an audio recorded meeting in the 1990-01 time-frame, Mike was nearly in tears that God was showing him he must endure the pain and sacrifice of another church planting. The rainbow was his sign.
